Schaumburg Township District Library Extension Services Director to Retire
Submitted by Susan Miura on Mon, 06/03/2013 - 8:21amWith thirty-four years and a plethora of awards under her belt, Schaumburg Township District Library’s Extension Services Director Barbara Adrianopoli is retiring. Barb said she was “excited” when she was hired in 1979 as reference librarian and supervisor of the Hoffman Estates branch library. Over the past 34 years, she led the Hoffman Estates branch from a dilapidated firehouse to a room in Village Hall to a new building in its original location at 1550 Hassell Rd. Additionally, she was given the task of creating an outreach program. Director Michael Madden, who retired in 2008, wanted the library to have a bigger presence in the community and provide services to those who needed them most: seniors and the homebound. Little did he know his directive would begin a whirlwind that would keep on spinning.
Over the years, Barb’s name became a household word throughout the senior and multicultural communities. She met with leaders at the Schaumburg Township Disability and Senior Services, the community nutrition site (The Barn), various senior residences, hospitals and schools. She actively participated on village commissions, established literacy classes, scheduled programs for adults and developed deposit collections (remote library sites) throughout the township and in the train station. And much to the delight of township residents, Barb started book talks within the library and at several senior locations.
But Barb was just beginning. She and her staff participated in Chamber of Commerce meetings, in parades, at community fairs and cultural celebrations. She acquired special equipment for library users with vision and hearing impairment, as well as an enhanced computer for a physically disabled staff member. Barb’s accomplishments were recognized with many awards, including (but not limited to) the Hoffman Estates Citizen of the Year award, the Studs Terkel Humanitarian Service Award, the John Philip Award for Outstanding Contribution and Prominent Leadership, and a Certificate of Recognition for Diversity and Outreach Services from the American Library Association.
“I was lucky to have great directors, great staff and a great board,” Barb said. “You can’t do anything without that.”
Upon leaving the library, Barb said she hopes it will continue to meet the needs of the township she loves.

Peoria Public Library Bookmobile Back on Road for Summer
Submitted by Trisha Noack on Fri, 05/31/2013 - 10:38amThe Peoria Public Library Bookmobile will resume service to Peorians on Monday, June 10 after being off the road since January 1, 2013 due to budget constraints.
A mid-year look at the budget allowed some funding to be readjusted, permitting the Bookmobile to again serve stops around the city. The summer schedule, launched just in time for Summer Reading, includes 23 separate stops in neighborhoods and at daycare centers around town.
The Bookmobile is a fully stocked library on wheels and has a good selection of books, magazines and even DVDs. Peoria Public Library has continued to purchase materials for the Bookmobile that were circulated out of North Branch during the service hiatus, so the materials will be up to date. Patrons can put materials on hold using the online catalog and request that they be delivered by the Bookmobile, offering access to the complete and extensive library holdings.
While the Bookmobile was out of service, the Peoria Public Library Outreach Department was delivering collections of books to locations that requested the service as a stopgap measure.
