Registration and Scholarship Information for "On the Front Lines" August 5-7

Registration Now Open for “On the Front Lines” Conference

“On the Front Lines,” a highly acclaimed continuing education opportunity sponsored by the Illinois State Library for “front line” library staff, returns for a ninth time to the University of Illinois Springfield, August 5–7. Participants are eligible to attend from public, academic, school, and special libraries. Registration is now open through L2 at http://www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=14610.

“On the Front Lines” is designed to equip and enlighten front line staff with training, exposure, and the latest technology tools and techniques that will enable them to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of their patrons. There will be approximately 40 concurrent sessions. Topics will include emerging trends related to social media and libraries, E-books, 3D printers, using digital media labs, common core education standards, library apps, and using sign language to promote literacy.

The registration fee is $15 per person, which covers all programs and conference supplied meals. Forty scholarships will be awarded to help defray the costs to attend “On the Front Lines.” A scholarship underwrites the cost of the registration fee and a two-night hotel stay. ISLMA Spring Mini-Conferences

Don't miss the upcoming spring mini-conferences. While sponsored by ISLMA, all types of librarians are welcome to attend these professional development events! Links to registration and session descriptions are available at http://www.islma.org

The mini-conferences will be held on Saturday 4/20 at Westfield Middle School in Bloomingdale, IL, and on Saturday 4/27 at Charleston High School in Charleston, IL. 
The conferences will run from 8:30 - 1:00. 
For just $20, you'll get to choose from a wonderful selection of concurrent sessions, participate in a build your personal learning network activity, and enjoy breakfast and a light lunch. CPDUs will be available for attendees.

Presenters Needed for 2013 ISLMA Conference

The theme of the 2013 ISLMA Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield is "School Libraries: The Core of Student Success." The conference will be held October 31 - November 2, 2013. The program committee is looking for sessions that demonstrate the wide variety of ways libraries and librarians help students succeed in both their academic or day-to-day lives.

The deadline for submitting an RFP is April 13, 2013. An acknowledgement will be sent upon receipt of the RFP and detailed information will be provided when the proposed session is accepted. Social Media in Libraries: Platforms, Plans and Practicalities April 6

April 6 Workshop

Facebook! YouTube! Twitter! iPhone! Pinterest! Many people use these and other online tools to communicate with friends, read the news, and play games. Social media focuses around information sharing and community building. Clearly, librarians have a definitive role to play in this confusing and evolving landscape! This workshop will do the following:

  • Explore the concepts of “Web 2.0” and “Library 2.0” and use these to demonstrate how librarians can leverage social media to connect patrons with their libraries
  • Outline the issues around social media policies and privacy concerns for librarians and patrons
  • Provide introductory hands-on experience with developing social media presences for libraries

No prior social media experience is needed to attend this workshop.

Workshop leader: Dr. Diane M. Rasmussen (formerly Dr. Diane Rasmussen Neal) is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario. She has been teaching social media workshops since 2007, and teaches a credit course about social media and libraries for MLIS students at Western. She is the editor of Social media for academics: A practical guide (Chandos, 2012).

Virtual Conference on EPUB3 in East Peoria April 17

RAILS has arranged for a group viewing of a virtual conference on EPUB3 at 10 a.m. on April 17 at the East Peoria service center. EPUB3 is a standard for interoperable e-books that is rapidly being adopted by the publishing and device manufacturing community. The virtual conference will be available at the East Peoria location only. All are welcome to attend in East Peoria for a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of EPUB3, suggested tools for implementation, barrier issues on the horizon, and the significant improvements in accessibility with EPUB.
