Full Time Position
The St. Charles Public Library District is seeking a qualified Preschool Outreach Librarian for our facility. The award-winning St. Charles Public Library District is located in the scenic Fox River Valley, 35 miles west of Chicago. The Library serves a district population of 55,092 residents and has a staff of over 100. We will be reopening our newly renovated Library in July 2021.
We are seeking candidates with an adaptable mindset and a passion for stellar patron service.
Responsible for providing a broad range of professional library services to all ages with a focus on children, students, parents and caretakers, especially preschool children through age 5.
- Coordinates preschool outreach activities: plans, prepares, conducts and may collaborate with other staff to provide programs for preschool children and educators including but not limited to story times and programs incorporating early literacy skills for preschoolers; oversees Preschool Forum.
- Maintains knowledge of youth services to include literature, media, emerging technologies, programming, strategies, etc., specifically those for preschool children, through age 5.
- Builds partnerships and relationships with preschools and community organizations through story time, workshops for educators, and other related outreach activities and events.
- Provides reference, reader advisory, and other library services; assists patrons in the use of library resources regardless of format.
- Instructs patrons on the use of library resources; prepares responses and communicates information to patrons, recommends developmentally appropriate materials in accordance with age, requests or interests.
- Does collection development and maintenance for assigned area(s); understands and applies general professional, as well as library-specific, collection guidelines; spends and tracks within the collection budget appropriately.
- Provides information about Youth Services events and processes event registrations; assists with development of events and calendar.
- Assists and teaches digital literacy skills to children, students, caregivers and educators through daily transactions or age-specific programming using library technology.
- Represents the Library at off-site functions like preschool visits or events.
- May collaborate with Communications & Marketing staff as appropriate.
- Monitors developments in library services; participates in professional development activities such as self-directed learning, webinars, and professional meetings; understands and uses all appropriate library hardware and software.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of the layout and appearance of the department.
- Maintaining confidentiality of patron records and transactions.
- Serves on Library staff teams and committees.
- Assists with other library functions and disciplines as required.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Library's service to its patrons by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
- Represents the organization with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in library sciences; AND two (2) years of experience in early literacy and library youth services functions.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Library policy and procedures.
- Principles and practices of library science, including reference interviewing and research techniques and sources; public library services and collections; and using digital as well as print collections for youth.
- Bibliographic instruction.
- Theories of infant, child and adolescent learning, literacy development, brain development and implications on library services.
- Best practices for collection development and maintenance.
- Cultural trends and familiarity with current trends in library literature.
- Community area served by the Library.
- Principles and techniques of preparing effective written informational or educational materials.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Techniques for working effectively with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
- Using tact, discretion and prudence in working with those contacted in the course of the work.
- Use of electronic and multimedia resources and technologies as applicable to the delivery of reader advisory, reference and information services.
- Bibliographic instruction.
- Planning, developing and implementing library services, collections and programming for children from birth through middle school.
- Making effective oral presentations to large and small groups.
- Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- Illinois driver's license.
